Moments of
Transition

Transitions are the most important part of the game today especially at youth level. Team that can react the quickest or anticipate where the ball is going to go will get a huge benefit by taking their opponents by surprise.

phase1.png Phase 1

Keeping the ball is vital if teams want to score goals. The organisation of the opposition is key to making this section work. The strength of the opposition to disrupt play is key to this phase.

phase2.png Phase 2

Now the players must quickly recover to get behind the ball, try win it back quickly and prevent the opposition from scoring. Players must look and communicate to prevent opponents from scoring on the counter attack.

phase3.png Phase 3

The team must fall back into a defensive shape pressing all over the pitch to make it dicult for the opposition to move the ball into dangerous positions.

phase4.png Phase 4

Your team must try to take advantage of players out of position the minute they lose possession of the ball. You take advantage of your opponent’s weakness with an attack at goal.

Transitions are times when you can see your players making decisions quickly when they are under pressure – so you need to make sure players are getting the repetition needed so they can make decisions almost without thinking.

The more stimuli a player is exposed to during practice the better their decision making becomes. Players need to be given the right environment to make decisions in a variety of game realistic settings and the coaching points of each of the sessions you use or the drills you play with your players must be met.
