Coaching Objectives

Players must use their brains to make good passes so their team mates can make a one touch pass to the next player. This is a big development game for technical skills, ball control and passing/receiving.

Drill Setup

  • 10 Mins
  • 3+ Players
  • 12 x 8 y

Execution Steps

The three players (here marked A,B and C) make combination passes to keep the ball moving using long and short passes. A passes to B who half turns and passes into the run of player A. A now passes to C who passes long to player B who has moved from the central cone to the top cone. A takes C's place, C goes to B and B goes to A. The game continues in this way getting faster.

Challenge Levels

  1. Players work all in – can use any number of touches to control ball.
  2. Players work two touch.
  3. Players work one touch.

Technique Tips

Quick Decision-Making:

  • Encourage youth players to make rapid decisions on the ball. Emphasize the importance of scanning the field and choosing the best passing option within one or two touches.

Quality First Touch:

  • Stress the significance of a controlled and purposeful first touch. A well-executed first touch sets the stage for accurate and efficient passing. Practice receiving the ball with the proper surface for a quick follow-up pass.

Body Positioning:

  • Teach players to position their bodies appropriately before receiving the ball. Open up their body to the field, allowing for better vision and facilitating quicker passing options.

Movement Off the Ball:

  • Emphasize the importance of off-the-ball movement. Encourage players to create passing lanes by positioning themselves intelligently, making it easier for teammates to execute one or two-touch passes.

Precision Over Power:

  • Instill the concept that accuracy is paramount in one and two-touch passing. Players should focus on delivering precise passes to teammates rather than attempting overly forceful passes, promoting effective ball circulation.
