Techniques to Play Forward

Difficulty

Encourage players to adopt open body positions to see forward options early. Emphasise quality of first touch to set up forward passes. Promote scanning before receiving, recognising gaps between lines.

Drive Play Forward

Control the game in midfield by keeping the ball and creating openings to pass forward into the attacking areas of the pitch and take advantage of overloads.

Coaching Objectives

Players will be able to link up and keep possession of the ball. Passing will be done at speed with good weight and direction. Link up play to create goal scoring chances.

Rondo: Win Possession, Play Forward, Score

High-tempo rondo leading to breakout attacks and finishing, developing possession, pressing triggers, transitions, and final-third delivery.

Coaching Objectives

Players learn to keep possession under pressure, execute quick passing combinations, recognise transition moments, and finish attacks. Defenders develop pressing angles, win-backs, breakouts, decision-making and attacking quickly once possession changes.

Technique Tips

  • Scanning before receiving—shoulders open, see pressure.
  • Receive on back foot to play forward quicker.

  • Breakout speed—explode forward, don’t jog.
  • Finishing—hit target before power.
