Coaching Objectives

The most effective press is done as a unit, when your side is able to force the opposition into errors, opening opportunities for your team. It then requires speed and accuracy to take advantage of these chances.

  • Beginner: Allow more touches per player and reduce the number of passes required before passing to Player A.
  • Intermediate: Limit the number of touches to two per player and keep the 10-pass requirement.
  • Advanced: Introduce a second floating player to increase passing options and defensive challenges.

Drill Setup

  • 20 Mins
  • 11 Players
  • 1 Large & 2 Small Goals
  • 6 Bibs
  • Half Pitch y

Technique Tips

  • Passing: Use quick, accurate passes with the inside of the foot to maintain possession.
  • Movement: Constantly move into space to create passing lanes and support teammates.
  • Shooting: Focus on proper body positioning and striking technique for accurate shots.
  • Communication: Use verbal and non-verbal cues to coordinate passing and movement.

What the Players Do

For this drill you need half a pitch with two 10x10 yard boxes in the centre, 11 players, bibs and balls. Play for 20 minutes. Start with two teams of 4 in the central boxes, there will be an…

Central Midfielder Rondo with Counter goals

Possession-based rondo with a central locked player while defenders counter into corner target goals on regaining possession.

Coaching Objectives

To improve ball retention under pressure, central support play, and quick transition to attack/defence when possession changes.

Drill Setup

  • 20 Mins
  • 7 Players
  • 4 target Goals
  • 7 Bibs
  • 10 x 10 y

Technique Tips

  • Central player: stay on half-turn, always available.
  • Outside players: quick passing, body open to field.
  • Defenders: press as a pair, communicate, and anticipate triggers.

What the Players Do

Final Third Transition & Pressing Game

A dynamic 6v6 game focusing on pressing, possession under pressure, and transitioning between defensive and attacking phases in the final third.

Coaching Objectives

To develop players’ ability to play out under pressure, recognize attacking opportunities, and defend compactly in the final third. Players learn how to build through possession, press effectively, and make quick decisions in transition moments — the key areas that define success in modern soccer.

Drill Setup

  • 30 Mins
  • 13 Players
  • 2 main 4 mini Goals
  • 2 sets Bibs
  • 60 x 40 y

Technique Tips

  •
  • Use quick, sharp passes with correct body shape to open the pitch.
  • Communication is vital — support the ball with clear angles.
  • Transition with intent: press immediately upon losing possession.
  • When pressing, close space quickly and force play wide.
  • Scan before receiving to identify open teammates or space to exploit.
  •

What the Players Do

Team A starts with the ball in their half, defending one main goal with a goalkeeper and six players. Team B has three pressing players in this half; their other three stay in their own half…
