Pass To Solve Tactical Problems

Difficulty

Teams can pass their way out of trouble but also they can unlock deep defences and congestion in areas of the pitch that stop them playing forwards. Make sure your team has a good passing and moving strategy to beat defensive tactics.

Coaching Objectives

To develop players’ passing accuracy, movement along lines, pressing skills, and spatial awareness in a fun, high-repetition environment.

Drill Setup

  • 10 Mins
  • 5 Players
  • 1 Bibs
  • 10 x 10 y

Technique Tips

  •
  • Receive with an open body to see the field.
  • Use the inside of the foot for controlled, accurate passes.
  • Move immediately after passing to become an option again.
  • Defenders: angle your run to block passing lanes, not just chase the ball.
  •

What the Players Do

Mark a 10x10-yard square using cones. Position 1 player on each side of the square (on the lines, not corners). Place 1 player inside the square as the defender. The 4 outside players…

Passing Against Deep Defences

When teams sit deep in defence the creative passing from just outside the penalty area is key to breaking through.

Coaching Objectives

Midfielders can receive just outside the penalty area and play creative passes into teammates being marked in the box that allows them to turn and shoot at goal.

Drill Setup

  • 20 Mins
  • 14 Players
  • 6 Bibs
  • 50 x 30 y

What the Players Do

Split the area into 5 zones with a middle zone of 20 yards, two outer zones of 10 yards and two zones in between of 5 yards. Each team has three players in the middle zone playing 3 v 3, a midfielder…

Pass Through A Crowded Midfield

Midfield can often be a difficult area to get through or bypass. You don't want to be booting the ball over the top because more often than not you will lose it. Pass through instead.

Coaching Objectives

Keeping possession in tight areas of the pitch that get crowded needs players to make short accurate passes at a speed that makes it difficult for defenders to win.

Mark out the area and put a target goal on each side. You need two teams of 4 players plus two magic men. Teams attack two of the goals that are opposite each other – so one team attacks North and South goals and one team attack East and West goals.

Drill Setup

  • 20 Mins
  • 10 Players
  • 4 Goals
  • 6 Bibs
  • 20 x 20 y

What the Players Do

The team in possession links up with the magic men who play for the team in possession making it 6v4 when they have the ball. Teams attack the goals the opposition are defending and defend the two…
