Movement to Receive

Coaching movement is not about using lots of equipment it is about engaging your players to making short, sharp moves with good body position to receive the ball including timing of runs

Coaching Objectives

To coach movement we are looking to work with the ball to improve speed of play, weight of the pass, accuracy and movement to receive the ball. This includes body positions and dribbling with the ball at pace. Look for players putting in the effort to get to the next position and be looking for the next pass.

Split The Defenders

In possession individuals in a team must try to keep their heads up and spot holes in the defence. These are the holes they must try to pass through to team mates who have moved to receive and take advantage. But players need to be patient!

Coaching Objectives

You want to see players making fast, accurate passes through holes they spot between defenders. Coach your players to keep their heads up and look for opportunities to pass the ball and communicate with team mates where that pass will go.

Also get your strikers/attackers latching on to the through passes and turning opportunities into goals.

Coaching Objectives

Players must learn to play with their heads up or to look up as often as possible. This helps them to spot openings to play through passes.

Communication to team mates and good passes into space for them to run onto is key to this game.

Players out of possession must be constantly on the move to create space to receive a pass.

Drill Setup

  • 25 Mins
  • 10 Players
  • 2 Goals
  • 4 Bibs
  • 60 x 30 y

Technique Tips

  • Passing: Emphasize accurate and firm passes to make it through the gaps.
  • Receiving: Encourage players to position their bodies correctly to receive the ball on the move.
  • Communication: Ensure players are constantly communicating to signal where they want the ball played.

What the Players Do

Use an area 60 x 30 yards split by 6 mannequins into three zones. The middle zone is where the focus of the game takes place. Start a 3v3 in the middle zone with one defender in the outside zone…
