Pressing, Possession and Finishing

Difficulty

Focus is on closing down quickly, anticipating passes, and forcing play into predictable areas. In possession, focus on first touch, composure, and smart decision-making under pressure. When finishing, stress timing of runs, body shape, and accuracy

Follow The Pass Combinations

Dynamic combination passing drill using central bounce players to develop communication, awareness, and movement off the ball in pairs.

Coaching Objectives

To improve players’ passing accuracy, timing of runs, and understanding of combination play. Players learn to use support players effectively while working on overlapping runs, quick wall passes, and vision to switch play across the area.

Drill Setup

  • 15 Mins
  • 7+ Players
  • 40 x 20 y

Technique Tips

  • Pass firmly to feet and communicate clearly before combining.
  • Time runs to arrive as the pass is played — not too early or late.
  • Open body shape when receiving from central bounce players.
  • Use overlaps and give-and-go movements to create natural passing lanes.

Coaching Objectives

The most effective press is done as a unit, when your side is able to force the opposition into errors, opening opportunities for your team. It then requires speed and accuracy to take advantage of these chances.

  • Beginner: Allow more touches per player and reduce the number of passes required before passing to Player A.
  • Intermediate: Limit the number of touches to two per player and keep the 10-pass requirement.
  • Advanced: Introduce a second floating player to increase passing options and defensive challenges.

Drill Setup

  • 20 Mins
  • 11 Players
  • 1 Large & 2 Small Goals
  • 6 Bibs
  • Half Pitch y

Technique Tips

  • Passing: Use quick, accurate passes with the inside of the foot to maintain possession.
  • Movement: Constantly move into space to create passing lanes and support teammates.
  • Shooting: Focus on proper body positioning and striking technique for accurate shots.
  • Communication: Use verbal and non-verbal cues to coordinate passing and movement.

Shooting Box – 18 Yard Box Finishing

This session is structured to allow players multiple opportunity to practice their combination play and finishing within the 18-yard box.

Coaching Objectives

This activity will work on players ability to apply their creativity and attacking skills within the 18-yard box. With smaller players numbers it allows players repeated opportunities for shots on goals and to express themselves.

Attacking principles can be applied throughout at the coach’s discretion, however there will be plenty of chances for one v one attacking situations, as well finishing opportunities.

Drill Setup

  • 20 Mins
  • Min 12 Players
  • 2 Goals
  • 2 Sets of Bibs
  • 18 y

What the Players Do

Players are split into two teams with a minimum of 6 players per team, plus a goalkeeper each. Using the 18-yard box as the playing area, three outfield players from each team will play each…
