Coaching Objectives

Defenders need to have the confidence to join in when the team attacks. If they can dribble confidently up the pitch, then the team can take advantage of overloads in midfield.

Drill Setup

  • 10 Players
  • 5 Bibs
  • 60x30 y

Technique Tips

  • Dribbling Control: Use the inside and outside of the foot to maintain close control while dribbling through the gate.
  • Head Up: Players should frequently look up while dribbling to scan the field and identify open gates or passing opportunities.
  • Movement and Positioning: Players in the central zone should create space by moving into open areas, enabling effective overloads.

What the Players Do

Set up by using an area of 15 x 15 yards split into 3 sections with cones creating two 5-yard gates on each side for players to pass through. You’ll need bibs and balls.  Split…

Attacking using fullbacks:

  • Try to take the defender into areas that are more attacking to take the initiative
  • Use feints and skills to create space and give time on the ball
  • Cross and finish on goal as soon as possible
  • Movement is key to keeping the defender at bay

Drill Setup

  • 25 Mins
  • 14 Players
  • 2 Goals
  • 2 sets of 4 Bibs
  • 60x40 y
