Third Man Counter Attack

A great way to get players to pass and move in a counter attacking style when your team has won the ball and can take advantage of overloads in the opposition half – I use this as a warm up to give my players a good idea of what the pitch is like

Overload Waves

Counter attacks happen a lot in youth games so make sure your players can exploit 4v2 situations using this attacking drill

Coaching Objectives

Coaching players to make the most of having 4v2 overloads on the counter attack seems easy but often the players make mistakes so the more they play it the more they will learn.

Drill Setup

  • 10 Players
  • 2 Goals
  • 6 Bibs
  • 40 x 30 y

What the Players Do

Set up so the goalkeepers are in the goals, with two teams of four players. One team defends and one attacks. The defending team has two players at each end of the pitch defending the goals and the…

  • 2 Goals
  • 7 Bibs
  • 60x40 y

Technique Tips

  • Passing Precision: Focus on sharp, accurate passes, especially the initial pass from the attackers by the goal to their teammates in the other half.
  • Positioning: Attackers should spread out, utilizing width and depth to stretch defenders and create space.
  • Communication: Clear verbal and non-verbal cues between attackers will improve coordination and increase goal-scoring chances.
  • Quick Reactions: Goalkeepers and defenders must be alert and anticipate attackers’ movements, keeping body positions open for quick adjustments.

What the Players Do

Set up by using an area of 60 x 40 yards, split into two halves, with a goal at each end. You need balls, cones, bibs and two goals. Split your players into two teams of 8, each with a…
