Counter Attack To Keep Possession And Score

Difficulty

Focus on quick recognition of counter-attack moments, with positive first touches forward and early passes into space. Encourage players to scan for recovering defenders, keep composure under pressure, and choose the right moment to release.

Coaching Objectives

  • This is all about player movement to create angles for passing options. The player in the centre is there to give triangles that make passing easier so that player must work hard to be open to the pass.
  • Players need good first touch and passing skills to keep the ball for 5 passes.
  • The defenders must press as a pair with nearest player going to the ball and second defender covering the passing lanes.
  • Improve passing accuracy, movement off the ball, and decision-making while under pressure, ultimately leading to better possession retention.

Drill Setup

  • 15 Mins
  • 8 minimum Players
  • 2 Bibs
  • 25 x 50 y

Technique Tips

  • Emphasize quick passing and movement to create passing angles.
  • Exploit overloads to keep possession.

What the Players Do

Play the game starting in one side of the area using two-touch. The player in the centre is there to create passing triangles. The two defenders try to intercept or recover the ball as quickly as…

Counter Attacking from Wide & Central

Many goals are scored from teams transitioning quickly when winning possession and creating overloads, this drill will allow players the opportunity to practice this.

Coaching Objectives

Coaching the reaction and decision making on and off the ball when regaining possession will help players counter attack effectively and create goal scoring opportunities. Support play is also important to allow forward passes and create overloads.

Drill Setup

  • 60 Mins
  • 18 Players
  • 2 Goals
  • 18 Bibs
  • 110x75 y

What the Players Do

Full pitch 3 10x10 boxes placed across the half way line.  18 players, 3v1 in two wide boxes and 2v2 in central box, 1v1 on outside of the 18 yard box.  Practice starts…

Third Man Counter Attack

A great way to get players to pass and move in a counter attacking style when your team has won the ball and can take advantage of overloads in the opposition half – I use this as a warm up to give my players a good idea of what the pitch is like
