Anticipating the pass

Difficulty

Encourage players to constantly scan before and after receiving, reading body shape, pressure, and passing lanes. Promote half-turned positions to see both ball and opponent. Emphasise timing of movement to arrive as the pass is played, not after.

Coaching Objectives

  • Passing with different parts of the foot
  • Passing at different angles
  • Receiving from different angles and pace of the pass
  • Decision making, what, where and how

Notes

  • When we play a long pass, it must be played with speed.
  • If the pass is short, we should lay it off softly, in diagonal to help our teammate be able to step into his pass.
  • We should always try to play the ball to our teammate’s foot furthest away.
  • Always play the ball along the ground
  • Try to look around and scan the area before receiving the ball.

Drill Setup

  • 15 Mins
  • 6-12 Players
  • 25 x 25 y

Technique Tips

  •
  • Open body shape: receive half-turned toward the next cone.
  • Take first touch forward into space, not back toward the ball.
  • Keep knees bent and stay on your toes for quick adjustments.
  • Use the inside of the foot for precision and speed.
  • Scan twice — once before the pass comes, once as it arrives.
  • Pass with weight and purpose (not too soft, not too hard).
  •
