7v7 to 9v9 Triangle pass

This drill works on basic actions in passing and receiving the ball and movement to be in a position to receive the ball. Works for players to get their technique and movement right.

Coaching Objectives

Pass quality, weight & accuracy

Open movement after pass – aware of next ball (think next action)

Drill Setup

  • 12 minutes Mins
  • 12 Players
  • 12 x 12 y

What the Players Do

Coaching Objectives

  • The possession team is looking to create triangles with players moving to make it easier for the player on the ball to pass it
  • Use one and two touch play
  • Use long and short passes and create triangles using the players in the middle.
  • All players should be moving to support the pass, opening passing routes to give options to the player on the ball.
  • Positioning, movement and decision making are the keys to the games
  • Speed of play is important – in the videos the speed is fast but at first you will not get that speed this is what you are eventually aiming to achieve.

Drill Setup

  • 25 Mins
  • 9 Players
  • 3 x red 3 x yellow Bibs
  • 15 x 15 y

What the Players Do

7v7to 9v9: SSG 6v6/6v5

In this small-sided game two teams play off defending different situations. Great for attacking players in 1v1, 2v1 situations with match specific action like rebounds, counter attacks and overloads.

Coaching Objectives

ATTACKING

  • Dribble using the leg furthest away from the defender and try to use the outside of the foot
  • Try to take the defender into areas that are more attacking to take the initiative
  • Use feints and skills to create space and give time on the ball
  • Finish on goal as soon as possible
  • Movement is key to keeping the defender at bay
  • Be ready for quick transition if the ball is lost

DEFENDING

  • Always know where the ball is and player they are marking
  • Position the body sideways so reaction speed is faster
  • Be on balls of feet so reaction also quicker
  • Use defensive feints to trouble the attacker and cause mistakes
  • When attacker is close eyes on ball not on player
  • Don't jump in and make it easier for the attacker
  • If beaten by the attacker's skill sprint to the goal to defend it
  • The defence must keep their lines tight and narrow so as not to get beaten.

  • It is very important that defenders win the second ball after an attacking player shoots on goal.

  • Be ready for quick transition if the ball is won

Drill Setup
