Difficulty

Keep possession of the ball in in this session involves using small sided games, magic men, overloads and shooting at goals. The games are based on position and possession creating a great session to use with your team.

7v7 to 9v9 Triangle pass

This drill works on basic actions in passing and receiving the ball and movement to be in a position to receive the ball. Works for players to get their technique and movement right.

Coaching Objectives

Passes should be on the ground not up in the air so the ball is easier to receive.

Good first touch 

Body position to receive 

Pass quality, weight & accuracy 

Open movement after pass – aware of next ball (think next action)

Drill Setup

  • 12 minutes Mins

What the Players Do

Keep possession of the ball in a drill using two teams of 4 players and 2 players who act as ‘floaters’ and always play for the team in possession. The overload is always 6 vs 4 in favour of the team with the ball.

Coaching Objectives

  • Triangles are the basis of the passing movement
  • Players of the same line should be staggered.
  • Quick reaction after losing possession.
  • Focus on the players’ positioning, movement and decision-making.
  • It is important players get the passes and the speed which the ball circulates at right.
  • Never lose control over the speed of the ball. If players lose control over the speed of the ball chances of losing possession are higher.

  • Attackers: Focus on quick passes, off-the-ball movement, and communication.
