Difficulty

This practice session works on players' awareness by reading their opponents in each phase. Players must look for triggers to press and react in transition. Overload situations are key with positional movement vital to recovering the ball.

The focus of this possession game is on blocking the central areas and forcing play wide where the wide player faces an overload from the defending team who press to win possession.

Drill Setup

Technique Tips

  • Scanning: Encourage players to constantly check their surroundings to see passing options and avoid defensive pressure.
  • Body Positioning: Players should position their bodies to receive the ball on the half-turn, enabling them to switch directions quickly.
  • Defensive Communication: Defenders should talk constantly, shifting together to block any potential paths through the central zone.
  • Passing Timing: Attackers must time their passes effectively to exploit gaps in the defenders' positioning.

You need two teams of four and a defending team of 6. The two teams of four are free to move wherever they want; challenge is to keep ball and attempt to pass, dribble, or run through central zone.…

4v4+4 Beat the Block

This practice focuses on attackers switching and changing the direction of attack by breaking the central block and defenders blocking the central zone to force wide creating an overload helping to regain possession.

    • Look for quick passing combinations to break through defensive lines. Use movement off the ball to create space for a central pass.
    • Encourage composure when entering the central square, focusing on body positioning and vision to see passing lanes.
  • Defensive Tips:

    • Stay compact in the middle, force play wide, and use your body to block passing lanes into the central square.
    • Communication is key to creating overloads in wide areas when pressing to win the ball.
