Difficulty

Keeping possession is a key element of your coaching strategy when you move to play 9v9 games. In this week's 7v7 to 9v9 transition Andy Maciel takes you through best practice for getting your players to react with the ball and to react without it.

Working in overloads this is a great possession game which gets teams to keep possession with good passing, movement and decision making. It also coaches the defending team to react quickly in transition

Coaching Objectives

Look for long and short passing around the area

Use the team of four floaters to create triangles in the middle opening passing lines and offering a number of options to the players on the ball.

Focus on quality of the pass, body position, movement, decision-making, direction and speed of play

This drill works on players receiving the ball and having to make quick decisions to shield the ball, pass the ball and transfer the ball to another square all under pressure from pressing defenders

Coaching Objectives

Possession team 

  • Spread out to maximise space and time to receive the ball
  • Protect the ball until the supporting players have joined in the square
  • Firm accurate passing in tight area
  • Minimum number of touches
  • Good decisions and execution

Pressing team

  • Press intelligently 
  • Force pass into defending trap
