Coaching Objectives

  • Good first touch to keep ball moving
  • Create passing lines
  • Body shape to receive ball on back foot
  • Try to make diagonal passes as during a match if players use diagonal passing it is more difficult to defend
  • Left and right feet should be in action
  • Look for one touch passing but if the player needs an extra touch allow it
  • Keep control of the speed of the ball, – look for a good tempo to the passing. Losing control of the speed makes it harder to control and can lead to loss of possession
  • Good passes are on the ground not up in the air or bouncing along
  • Try using different numbers of balls to make the drill harder

Drill Setup

  • 25 minutes Mins
  • 4+ Players
  • 12 x 10 y

What the Players Do

Player 1 begins the exercise with a small touch so that he can then make a pass with a moving ball. Player 1 focuses on the movement of player 2 before passing the ball. Player 3 moves in…

This is a game of fast attacking and counter attacking with overloads constantly changing between 2v1 and 3v2. A great game for awareness on the pitch, passing and movement to take advantage and create goal scoring opportunities

Attacker

  • The passes should be quick and firm and be played to team mates strongest foot.
  • Dribble with head up to spot the best pass available.
  • Play on the half-turn to scan the pitch and see your teammate’s position.
  • Keep moving to new passing lines to your teammate.
  • Fake movements to drag the defender away and then receive the ball with more time and space.
  • Use the inside of your foot for accurate passing.

Defender

  • Cut off the passing lines and pressure the closer player with the ball.
  • Press but don't dive in to the tackle

6v6 Small-Sided Game

In this 6v6 game you want to see teams attacking and defending at the end of practice – which players are performing best in the scenario and why? It should be a reflection of the work you have done with your players using good technique

Coaching Objectives

Look for functions & actions practiced earlier in session.

Fast Attack to finish

Immediate reaction to trans A>D

ATTACKING

  • Dribble using the leg furthest away from the defender and try to use the outside of the foot
  • Try to take the defender into areas that are more attacking to take the initiative
  • Use feints and skills to create space and give time on the ball
  • Finish on goal as soon as possible
  • Movement is key to keeping the defender at bay
  • Be ready for quick transition if the ball is lost

DEFENDING

  • Always know where the ball is and player they are marking
  • Position the body sideways so reaction speed is faster
  • Be on balls of feet so reaction also quicker
  • Use defensive feints to trouble the attacker and cause mistakes
  • When attacker is close eyes on ball not on player
  • Don't jump in and make it easier for the attacker
  • If beaten by the attacker's skill sprint to the goal to defend it
  • The defence must keep their lines tight and narrow so as not to get beaten.
  • It is very important that defenders win the second ball after an attacking player shoots on goal.
  • Be ready for quick transition if the ball is won

  • 30 mins Mins
  • 12 Players
  • 2 Goals
