7v7 to 9v9 Warm up 1

This is the warm up for the first session in our 7v7 to 9v9 series using passing and pressing games to give players a focus for the next part of the session

Coaching Objectives

In both parts (3v1 and 9v3) players should receive on the back foot, scan constantly and show disguise on the pass. In the second part you also want to see players creating triangles for passing options, all players active in creating passing lines, short and long combinations, position - movement - decisions and ball speed (quick or slow as pressure dictates).

Drill Setup

  • 15-20mins Mins
  • 12 Players
  • 3 Bibs
  • 8x8 and 9x9 y

What the Players Do

In part one the 3v1three players are keeping the ball away from one player in the middle. The three players go one on each line but can cross to the spare line if it is free, and can move from side to…

7v7 to 9v9: 3v3 Scoring Zone

This game gives players lots of problems to solve in a 3v3 game with four goals - can I switch play, can I move into positions to make it easier to receive, can I play a through ball.

Coaching Objectives

Coaches should be looking for

  • Movement to create space for individuals and team mates -
  • Draw play to one side & exploit space created on the other by switching play
  • Control speed of ball
  • Combination play to keep possession and set up goals
  • 1v1/2v1 duels to win the ball or keep possession
  • Win the ball back as quickly as possible

Drill Setup

  • 20 Mins
  • 16 Players
  • 6 mini Goals
  • 8 Bibs
  • 32 x 25 y

What the Players Do

Set up two pitches and create a 6 yard scoring zones in front of the goals. You need four teams of 4 players with two teams playing against each other on each pitch. Play 3v3 with each team having…

7v7 to 9v9: 6v6 Attack v Defence

Attack plays defence in this 6v6 game. There are two different ways of scoring, one team scores in the main goal and the other in small goals so the tactics for both teams will be different.

Coaching Objectives

Coaches should be looking for players to essentially enjoy the game at the end of a training session. Here we look for good combination play, open body to receive, passing short and long, switching play, and working the ball into shooting positions with through balls.

Drill Setup

  • 25 Mins
  • 12 Players
  • 1 main 2 target Goals
  • 6 Bibs
  • 36 x 40 y

What the Players Do

Attacking team starts with the ball for each reset of the play. Simple instructions for this game. The attacking side – the side you are coaching – look to score in the main goal using…
