Magic Player 5v1: Scan, Support & Keep Possession

Two 4v1 rondos connect through magic players, developing scanning, support, passing angles and intelligent possession under pressure.

Coaching Objectives

Develop players' ability to retain possession under pressure by recognising and exploiting an additional player who can support either rondo.

The practice focuses on:

  • Scanning before receiving.
  • Recognising where the pressure is coming from.
  • Creating passing angles.
  • Supporting the player in possession.
  • Playing away from pressure.
  • Using the magic player at the correct moment.
  • Moving immediately after passing.
  • Receiving with an open body shape.
  • Switching play between areas.
  • Understanding when to play quickly and when to retain possession.
  • Developing awareness of players and space outside the immediate playing area.

The magic player creates a temporary 5v1 when joining a rondo, giving the players in possession a numerical advantage. However, the real challenge is deciding when, where and how to use that advantage.
