In this drill an overload makes counter attacking easier but realistic to the game. The 5v3 gives lots of opportunities for you to coach the tactic of counter attacking and helps players to understand why speed of play is so important in transition.

Coaching Objectives

Transition Defence to Attack:

  • If a player wins the ball, look to see where the goalkeeper is and try to shoot on target.
  • Scan the pitch to see if a teammate is in an advanced position with a chance to shoot on goal.
  • If a team recovers the ball near to their own goal the should look for their goalkeeper or a teammate to build out from the back and keep possession.
  • Use the overloads when winning the ball back to find space and secure possession.

Transition Attack to Defence:

  • On losing possession close down the opponent with the ball to prevent quick play.
  • Press the player with the ball don't dive in and give an opportunity to quickly get past and attack the goal
